This summer, I got the opportunity to work with Arts Etobicoke, a community organization here in the GTA. This was my first contact with Arts Etobicoke, and I loved every minute of it. (Shoutout to Tamara from Shakespeare in Action for sending me their way!)
The Arts in Wincott Park festival was a hybrid of an annual festival that Arts Etobicoke put on every year. This year, with COVID-19 changing how they would host the festival, Arts Etobicoke organized a number of workshops to happen outdoors in a community park. Every week, one day would be given to artists to host workshops with members of the community, of all ages! Visual arts, music, theatre, and... DANCE! This year was Arts Etobicoke's first year integrating DANCE into their festival, and I was so honoured to be a part of the inaugural year! Over the course of three weeks, I would travel to Wincott Park and teach community children various movement and dance workshops. Each week brought different (and some returning!) community children to the park and to my classes. Working with different age groups, we ran like cheetahs and stomped like elephants, we played with our shadows, and we learned and broke down choreography. Each week we were blessed with sunshine and each other's energy. Special thanks to John, Sair, the many volounteers, my good friend and assistant Skye, and all of the participants and their community. Check out my bio on their website: https://www.artsetobicoke.com/meet-the-artists/ I hope to be back next summer!
